DB: A girl with not enough funds April 28, 2008

Filed under: Daring Bakers — bombshellwithin @ 10:00 PM

This month there was this amazing recipe for cheesecake pops. I REALLY wanted to make them, but then I took a look at the recipe. Sure, it made about 30-40 of those suckers and it looked really good. I was sure that if I made the recipe my friends would love me forever. However, as most of you know, I’m just a meager college student. Since I’m on the outs with my mother, she’s the one who usually funds my impromptu projects like this.

But, this month I had to be a sensible adult. I simply could NOT reason the expense for 5 packages of cream cheese, all the eggs, heavy cream, shortening and all the chocolate. I even thought about sweet talking my friends in order to get them to cover the costs for me. However, I simply couldn’t bring myself to do that. Call it pride or whatever else (see: stupidity) .

So I ask that all the DB followers to forgive me this month. I do hope to eventually make the recipe. I just couldn’t find the funds in time to make the deadline.

Be sure to check out my Daring Baker’s page on the upper right hand corner for you to check out the DB blogroll. Go show the other DBers some love and support. I’m sure they did a spectacular job.

Movie Review: Forbidden Kingdom April 26, 2008

Filed under: Movie Review — bombshellwithin @ 9:39 PM

I have no idea why we ended up going to the movies again.  But we did, this time to see this semi action packed movie.  While I’m all for Jackie Chan and Jet Li, it’s obvious when I say that I’m not all that into action movies.  Still, I didn’t wished to be left home alone so I tagged along with the guys.

Going into the movie, I hadn’t really any clue what the movie was about.  So let me enlighten you.  You see, there’s this dorky kid (He was that same dorky kid from the movie Transformers) who is really into KungFu movies and keeps going into Boston’s ChinaTown in order to get some new flicks from this ancient pawn dealer.  There he finds this weird stafff he’s been dreaming about.  As it turns out the staff must be returned to it’s rightful owner and, of course, the teen is the one who ends up having to do so.  He ends up in another dimension and has to embark on the journey.  Not only to return the staff but to get in touch with his true self.

The story is easy to follow and can be very funny at times.  I felt some of the action/fight sequences were a little too long but the guys were really into it.  A friend of ours said he found the movie to be just amazing.  While I can’t really agree with the “amazing” part, I have to say the movie wasn’t all that bad.  It was fun and entertaining.  Not to mention full of heart.  I’m not entirely sure if this movie is supposed to be a family flick.  I think some of the nuances of the relationships are a little too complicated for small children.  But I think pre-teens, teens and young adults alike will enjoy the movie.  Even if it’s not your sort of thing, like me.

Movie Review: Forgetting Sarah Marshall April 26, 2008

Filed under: Movie Review — bombshellwithin @ 4:24 AM

It almost came down to using rock-paper-scissors in order to decide which movie to see. We were between this movie and “Baby Mama” and we’d decided to go to the midnight showing. There were 4 of us and we were basically split down the middle. While the other half didn’t entirely mind if the other was seen, we were sticking to our top choices. After trying to pick random numbers written secretly, we took it down to setting scizor’s iTunes to random and guessing before the song came on if it was in English or Spanish. With only one mistart because the first song played turned out to be instrumental, I won out in guessing the song would be in English. Actually, I had no choice since Benji had already decided his choice would be Spanish.

I’d read pretty great reviews about “Forgetting” and not to mention the lead character is in the show How I met your mother, one that we’re practically addicted to. Needless to say, I was pretty happy to have gotten my way. So, off we went.

In the end, the movie was worth the 6 bucks in the first 10-15 minutes. I won’t give it away, but you certainly catch an eyeful and it’s truly not expected. It’s not something you see in every movie. But it’s nice to see something different for a change. The movie itself is very sweet. It’s about this music composer in LA who is dating the lead actress of the series he composes for. They’d been together for 5 years when she decides to dump him for someone else. All angsty and hurt, he decides to take a vacation in Hawaii only to find his actress girlfriend there with a rocker named Aldous Snow. Aldous is the typical rocker who used to have a druggy past but had found spirituality and still fills his time with lots of sex. A compassionate desk clerk helps Pete out and he does everything to get over his ex and of course falls for the new clerk in his life, all while learning his life has new meaning.

While it can almost be slow and predictable, the movie does have it’s surprises. It’s actually pretty insightful with some of the characters and I was particularly happy to see that the rocker character didn’t end up villainized. He seemed almost human and provided us with a lot of laughs, when that is we were gawking at him in skimpy little clothes. Overall, I thought the movie was very feel-good. I felt very bubbly and happy afterwards. The can’t be said about the other guys who said the movie was far too long. Apparently these sorts of romantic comedies, according to them, weren’t supposed to last that long. I didn’t feel all the time passing by because I was delightfully entertained.

Fluff five April 25, 2008

Filed under: meme — bombshellwithin @ 8:14 PM

Seems that on the day that I took to update my blog(no, seriously!  I’m up to date.  So be sure you read back.  Since the freedom post, I think I’ve written a dozen posts.  Check back and be sure you have not missed any, I promise that with this post I end all back posting!), MQ decides to hit me up with a meme.  How could I refuse her when she’s such a darling?  So, let’s see what I reveal to the world tonight.

Five things found in your bag:

  1. Lipgloss- Seriously, are you that surprised to find this out?  I always have some sort of gloss in my bag.  Lately I’ve been addicted to Burt’s Bees shimmering tinted gloss in rhubarb.
  2. Pencil case with change- I actually didn’t have a wallet until yesterday when I got myself a very cute one at Border’s.  I haven’t changed it out yet.  But I will soon.
  3. Camera in red leather case- I almost always have my camera with me in the lovely red leather case that my mother gave me for my birthday.  I really need to get back into taking random pictures so I can blog about them.
  4. Teeny Tiny umbrella- It rains a lot here, especially in the afternoon when you least expect it.  This little thing is a godsend and I keep it on hand.  I may get soaked, but it still allows for a measure of emotional security and keeps my glasses dry since spotted glasses are a true pet peeve of mine.
  5. Agenda- I often joke about how if I don’t write it into my agenda, I will forget about it.  This little agenda is a beautiful little book that allows me space to write things up daily.  I leave myself notes over what I need to do and what I did do on that day.

Five favorite things in your room:

  1. Jamie- My computer, Jamie, is set right beside my bed.  This is where I stay connected and concoct all my madness.
  2. Full length mirror- In one corner of my room I have this full length mirror on a stand.  It’s this very pretty sort of cherry wood and seems very classic.
  3. Center ivy rug- When I first moved into my room, I felt the center of it just seemed to bare.  So after a lot of shopping around I found this rectagular rug, green and beige with a nice border of ivy.  I am fond of my name so I like everything ivy-laced.
  4. Red leather corset- I don’t know if this counts, but I do love it.  I haven’t worn it in a while but it’s one of my favorite pieces.  It’s a real corset and requires someone lacing me into it for me to wear it.
  5. Cow- I don’t know if this one counts either… but my calico cat is in my room because I am.  I love her to pieces.

Five things you have always wanted to do:

  1. Vist France to learn French- They say the only way to learn a language is to immerse yourself someone and force yourself to learn it.  It happened with Spanish, I’d love to be able to do that with French too.
  2. Get married- Ever since I was a little girl I’ve been dreaming of the perfect wedding and everything.
  3. Be pregnant- Also since I was a little girl I wanted to know what it was like to have children and even if I adopt to have them, I’d still wish to know what it’s like to grow a little person inside my body.
  4. Publish romance novels- I’ve made it no secret that I read a lot of romance novels.  What most don’t know is that I’ve actually begun pulling together my thoughts to write them.  If I were to ever attempt to publish smething, this would be the genre.
  5. Sing- This was a talent I wish I had.  Unfortunately, while I think I can sing to a certain extent, it’s nothing to write home about.  I wish I had the talent to get on stage and belt it out, leave people in awe of my beautiful voice.

Five things you are currently into:

  1. Watching “The Riches”- I’ve been watching this show by streaming it via aol video.  It has Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver.  It’s truly different and very funny.  I can’t wait for the new episodes to come out for this second season.
  2. Trying to collect certain books to romance series- Lately I’ve been into reading romance novels that come out as series.  So far I’m trying to read all of Julia London’s Rogues of Reagent Street Series, Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton Series and Stephanie Lauren’s Bastion Club Series.  Most I’ve been reading out of order, just getting them as I find them.
  3. Posting on forums at a certain personals site- I totally love posting maniacally in a Word Games forum.
  4. Trying to enamor a certain gent – He knows who he is *blows a kiss*
  5. Keeping track of all my friends’ blogs- I just love reading about all their lives, all their projects and all the silliness.  I often feel very isolated here on island, so it’s nice to be able to connect with people who share your common interests.

Five people you want to tag:

  1. Scizor- bee-yotch!  ‘Cause I said so!
  2. Gretchen Noelle- Just because I love her blog and it’s nice when people share more about themselves.
  3. CB- ‘Cause she’s fierce and I love giving her stuff to ramble happily about.
  4. turtly- Jamie just loves doing memes and ’cause I don’t want her left out.
  5. puptart - Because we seem to not have talked in forever and I miss hearing about her.

Restaurant Review: Martin’s BBQ April 24, 2008

Filed under: Restaurant Review — bombshellwithin @ 11:24 PM

Located in University Plaza, Mayaguez

I realized this food place was in this shopping center very recently.  I’d spotted the sign along with the rest of the store signs on the major sign post.  So I knew it was there.  I go to Walgreens often enough that I see this sign posting each time.  But it never ocurred to me where precisely it was located.  My ‘hubby’ enlightened me and just this week I decided that we should go to it.  So we set a date for tonight (I wrote it into my agenda and everything so I wouldn’t forget) with the express purpose to give it a try and for me to write all about it.

I have to admit that we went into it with fair hopes.  We were open enough to desire giving it a fair shot.  After all, we like trying out new places and seeing what sort of food they have especially since I began writing reviews on my blog.  There are our staple places for certain foods but we still like to try others.  It’s not unusual for us to go out on dates like this one.  Unlike other Puerto Ricans, we do not fear stepping out of the food box.

Upon entering the establishment, I sort of wished I bothered with sunglasses.  The place is painted an unusually bright color.  We march across the long length of tables and head over to the food counter/checkout area.  First we carefully examined the menu, checking out the prices and everything.  I do not take my selection process lightly.  The guy behind the counter informed us that the roasted chicken would take 15 minutes or so because it wasn’t done.  We told him that was fine and I thought to order some chicken breast.  I was informed that it was cooked as ordered, and I was impressed.

Sadly, I wish to say that my experience at this place continued along nicely.  Unfortunately, as we asked about other things on the menu, even the supposed specials of the day, they didn’t have anything.  To quote scizor, “I hate this place, it doesn’t have any food.”  So we sat down to wait for the chicken to be done.  When it was, the guy behind the counter said he hadn’t rung up our order.  When he asked me what mine was, I repeated my chicken breast order… which apparently they did not take nor had any notion of.  {This is the part where I gave the boy an even stare and arched a brow.  Scizor says that that was the moment I glared him to death and flustered him so much that he hurried to the back to see what he should do.)

Resigned, we ordered the roast chicken with different sides.  The selection seemed to be typical Puerto Rican fair.. the rice, the beans, the amarrillos, the yuca, the sweet potato, the guineos, etc.

Now, because scizor ordered up some mofongo, this proceeded to take another 15 minutes of us waiting with the rest of our food.  This was annoying and bothersome.  We’d already waited some 15 minutes before for the silly chicken!  But, I have to say one thing… it was worth it to see scizor’s face…

look of disappointment

Of complete and utter disappointment

because his mofongo was pale and tiny.

I am shameless, so I admit to laughing so hard that I actually started crying.  But not so hard, mind you, that I couldn’t take the picture.  If it’s blurry you’ll now understand why.

The mofongo wasn’t bad even though the portion was small and bland.  The rice portion was way too much so I gladly shared with my ‘hubby’.  I’d also gotten the guineos en escabeche so I shared that too.  It seemed that they served him more chicken than they served me.  The chicken was the only truly good thing of the meal.  It was moist and pretty well seasoned.  We both agreed on that.   The soda was decent too.  Although I’d served myself up something from the iced tea fountain.  But when I drank it, it turned out to be soda but without the bubbles.  Of course, anyone else might have kicked up a fuss but I am actually fond of flat soda.  Still, it wasn’t the iced tea it was labeled as.

For dessert we had a chocolate tres leches and a passion fruit cheesecake.  The funny thing was that scizor took up the former and I had the latter, but after we each had a bite of both, we switched.  He said the tres leches tasted funny, but I said it was cake soaked in chocolate milk and served with a swirl of chocolate mousse on top.  The cheesecake supposedly had passion fruit in it, something I really love.  But it just tasted like a regular cheesecake.  It was a bit too heavy for me but scizor seemed to have enjoyed it.

The people who worked there weren’t helpful nor did they bother to explain how to order.  The menu was confusing and most of the things on it were not available.  One ate from styrofoam containers, not even real plates.  The soda fountain didn’t seem to have much ice in it and I ended up with flat soda instead of the proferred iced tea.  There seemed to be quite a few people running around in back with the food, but only one person was up front taking orders.  The wait seemed long for any sort of food and the food was actually some sort of disappointment.

The actual seating area is large but the tables were slightly tilted.  There was music played throughout the establishment but it was random and didn’t hold any type of genre.  There were only one set of grabage bins and those were located in the back, not very convenient as you had to walk back to throw things out before walking the entire length of the restaurant in order to leave.

Overall, we had a good time which had little or nothing to do with the food or service.  It just so happens that we know how to laugh even when a lot of things seemed to have gone wrong.  I hate to say it, but I can’t say that I can recommend going to eat at this place.  I’ve never stated this and I truly don’t know how to proceed with it.  But, I’m always honest and try to be as fair as possible.  I even asked around to see what other people thought and I also asked friends to see if anyone else had gone to eat there.  Sadly, no one seemed to have anything good to say.  I doubt I’ll ever go back to it and scizor and I are currently taking bets to see how long the place lasts before it folds.

The “that looks about right” pasta salad April 22, 2008

Filed under: Recipes, food — bombshellwithin @ 10:36 PM

Most of you already know how I refer to my brand of cooking as college student ingenuity.  I cook with whatever I happen to have on hand, I don’t often have much of a budget to buy anything in accordance to what I hope to make… and anything in my pantry was most likely stolen from my mother’s or grandmother’s at some point.  Baking usually makes me go out and get ingredients.  After all, you can’t fake the carrots in a carrot cake or something like that.

But when it comes down to cooking dinner, especially since I’m often just cooking for me, I really don’t bother.  I just stare at the food I have and try to let it “speak” to me.  And because of this I usually end up tossing things into the pot and eating it, no matter how odd it may look.  It definitely does not hold up to the beautiful standard a lot of other food bloggers have.  While I do not think any of the other bloggers are actually snooty in anyway, my humble looking bowls just dont measure up.  It’s a good thing I don’t pretend to be in their league.

Sure, I can pull off delicious and spectacular food.  But like everyone else, that isn’t a daily thing.  I would bet that some people’s daily food looks a lot like mine.  In fact, my almond chicken looked a lot like CB’s cashew chicken and in fact the recipes are very similar.  And very few beside the puptart are willing to admit that their refined palette does not revolve around high snobby sort of food.

So where does that leave me?

Throwing random things together with pasta, of course!  I should have been born italian.  If I have nothing but pasta on my shelves, I’m still a happy girl.  I cook using just a skillet and a pot full of salted boiling water.  For tonight’s meal I did the following:

  • Caramelized sliced onions and minced garlic.  Set it aside in a medium bowl.
  • Cooked up chunks of chicken breasts seasoned with just some adobo.  Set aside with the onions.
  • On high heat, brown some butter and toss in a can of corn.  Fuly heat until the kernels are beginning to brown and add roasted red peppers until fully heated.
  • Boil up elbow macaroni pasta.  Cook and then toss with some olive oil.
  • Toss everything together into the bowl.  Add some splashes of balsamic vinagerette salad dressing.
  • Right before serving add some cubed cheese.  In my case, I had cheddar on hand.
  • Serve and consume with glee.

The inner sauce debate for chicken April 20, 2008

Filed under: Random musings, food — bombshellwithin @ 9:47 PM

For some off and inexplicable reason, I find myself truly craving either soy sauce or barbecue sauce.  I can’t explain it.  It’s a weird craving to have.  And since all I have in my freezer is chicken, that’s just what I’ll have to use them on.  The odd thing is, that even when I’ve had one or the other… I still want it.

First I made almond soy sauce chicken.  (I thought I had taken good pics of it, but it just didn’t seem to work out for me)  And this was very good.  I wondered why I didn’t slice up almonts more often and just dredge them in soy sauce and sesame seed oil more often.  This I made with some ramen noodles.  I think it would have come out better if I had had some scallions and onions and stuff to add to it, but my pantry was pretty bare when I made this.  But it was still damn good.

Then I switched over and made some bbq chicken pizza.  The premade pizza crust is always a handy thing to have around.  I loaded it with cheese and tons of chicken.  I use the Jack Daniel’s bbq sauce.  It’s not too sweet and has a good tanginess to it.  I’m very fond of it.

The following day I made soy sauce chicken wings.  I let them slow cook in a pot and I wished I had had some brown sugar to sweeten it ever so slightly.  But still, they were tender and good and seemingly hit the soy sauce spot.

Afterwards I grilled up some chicken breasts and again broke out the barbecue sauce.  I had a very simple meal with just some corn on the cob.

Interesting how I spent 4 days going back and forth with these dinners.

Do any of you find yourself suddenly craving such flavors for several days?

A box from somewhere- An homage to TW April 18, 2008

Filed under: Personal Interest — bombshellwithin @ 10:10 PM

First I ranted that I couldn’t find cupcake liners here.

And then I ranted about how I couldn’t find the cupcake pans.

I even showed how I macgyvered some cupcakes without them.

Apparently I left an impression.  Especially to those who have actual food blogs and bake cupcakes constantly.  This plight of mine seemed unacceptable and ludicrous.  But it seemed that I could make cupcakes just fine and I didn’t think much of my situation.  I would try a little harder to find some pans when I had the right budget for it.  I am a college student, after all.  And while my mother’s kitchen has the pans and everything, my kitchen by campus (where I am most of my time) just doesn’t quite make it with the things I might need to bake.  I often just buy disposable when I need to make something in a pinch.

Out of the blue sometime early March, TW asked if I had managed to find any pans and to fork over my address.  Since it was approaching my birthday, I’d been hadning over my postal addie to just about everyone so I didn’t much think twice of giving her mine.   (Oh, I think my mother would have heart palpitations if she knew.. she’s one of those sorts that trusts no one on the internet.  But I’ve learned to make some wonderful friends and don’t hold as many reservations as she does.)

So much had happened since then that I sort of forgot all about the exchange.  Until the postman showed up at my door, hollering my name.  This I found odd, I hadn’t ordered anything.  But I had a sudden suspicion even before I read Tempered Woman’s name on the return address.  I set the box down on my tiny counter and just looked at it in awe.  “No, she couldn’t have.” were the words I breathed out.

Trying not to tear the box apart, I tried to calmly open it.

She’d sent me her pans!

Believe me, I’ve been stalking her long enough to recognize them.

That and she sent me caramels!

gifts from TW

I got teary eyed, I really did.

And no, TW, I didn’t mind at all the second hand.

They will be loved and well used.

I hope I can do them justice.

So I’m going to say that TW is my new best friend!  (Sorry scizor!)  And that she TOTALLY plotted to be orginal and send me a birthday present precisely one month after the date knowing that by being late she would be one and only.  And because it arrived one month later, it would still count for my birthday.

TW thank you ever so much from the depths of my heart!

You have NO idea how much this meant to me!

Now to plot out what cupcake will be honored to be the first made with them.

I just need to get paid and I’m absolutely going to make something.

Maybe with the caramels.

I’ve been trying not to eat them just in case…

6 words April 16, 2008

Filed under: meme — bombshellwithin @ 9:24 PM

So, this is a meme I stumbled across as I was stalking CB.  And since she’s one of those sly devils who tag you just for having read her blog, I suddenly felt inclined to do it.

Write your memoir in 6 words.

Damn, how do I manage this?

Insane girly with too much time.

Slacking babe who talks too much.

She who killed those who meme.

Girl banging head against the keyboard.

Yeah… this could take a while.  I completely agreed with CB about how hard this is.  I ramble, I write WAY too much.  The funny thing is that in real life I’m far more quiet.  But for some reason, place a pen in my hands or my fingers near a keyboard and I can fly through my entire brain and range of emotions.  So this darn meme was really a challenge.  I walked away a bit and got a drink of water.  That’s when it hit me!

FlirtyRomantic… Passionate girl bombshell quests for true happiness.

Now, that wasn’t that difficult!

HA!  I’m so full of it.

But, who to tag now?

I think I shall hit up MQ, scizor and TW for this one.

*cackles evilly while blogging some more*

While in the end I decided not to submit these darling cupcakes to the puptart’s Need Food Event, I still felt that they were just too adorable not to put up.  ESPECIALLY since slush went and put the simple pic up on her reveal post rather than the really funny one.  But, that’s alright.  I understand completely that the woman has WAY too many things demanding her time and attention and she certainly does not need me pouting at her because the wrong pic was put up.   And so, I will just delight you all with our silliness…

Little Kirby was a cupcake:

And he had a lot of friends…

Of all things, they decided they wished to play with their max Kirby idol

“What fun!” they declared.
